As a hobby, collecting wines may have cost you hundreds of dollars that safekeeping them is probably you next priority.
The temperature required for storing wines has to be cold at 12 to 16 degrees Celsius. Stocked under the bed isn’t right.
The wines these days do not have to wait forever before being enjoyed so wide cellars may not be ideal. It is of an advantage for your wines if you have the time, extra space and savings to build your cellar. You should be thinking of a substitute manner of storing wines as putting up cellar in a household may not be your thing.
The garage, garden shed, vacant fireplace or a cupboard are great places for wine storage.
Whichever place you choose to keep your wine, there are important things to remember.
Areas in your household not subject to altering temperatures due to heating systems are ideal places for storage.
Wines taste better when placed in dark areas. Generally, wines must be kept away from direct sunlight.
Remember also to keep the wine bottles on their side. Corks were created to maintain its moisture with tight seals solid enough not to crush when pulled out by a corkscrew.
Take note that some wines do not have to be matured longer before being enjoyed. If you don’t have a wine cellar, you may buy wines that do not need to be stored for decades like white wines or modern red wines or a new Beaujolais.
Refrain from unnecessary transfers of wines from one place to another unless for a drinking purpose.
If you have a rare wine collection, you may opt for a wine and spirits company store it for you. Careful storage of wines is a must these days that companies can now offer safekeeping services for wines. This means more expense though so having this service should only be made for special wine collection or for anyone who desires to sell the wines in the future for higher prices.
