When you speak about Indian takeaways and takeaways in general, they are always considered as being fattening and bad for your health, but people never really realise that some of the menu is more healthy than others. Obviously if you will choose something that is greasy and covered in batter, it’s not going to be as good as say a vegetable curry. It’s all about knowing what’s the best and what’s the worst, while still enjoying your treat.
Here are a few tips to make sure you find the healthiest items on the menu for the next time you go to your local takeaways.
Fish and Chips: The worst items are chips, although you can really avoid having them, sausages, and pies. As for the best things, try to stick to fish, cod, haddock and plaice are the best as they contain the less fat.
Pizza: Your worst choice would be to have a deep pan or stuffed crust as these contain the most fat within the base. As for the toppings of the pizza, try and stay away from having extra cheesy toppings or things like pepperoni. For more healthy options, choose either fish or vegetables on the top of a thin crust base.
Chinese: With this, try and avoid crispy and greasy items because it generally means they have been deep fried. The worst items on the menu are sweet and sour battered meat balls, fried rise, and spring rolls. As for the best items, it has to be steamed all the way. Items like crab and corn soup, beef, chicken, steamed vegetables, or boiled rice, all these are better for you.
Indian food: Just like the rules of Chinese, the items that contain the most fat and the ones that have been deep fried. The healthiest items are vegetable curry, chicken tikka, madras or bhuna. The healthiest item to have with these would be boiled rice.
Hopefully you will reconsider your order next time you go to order your sweet and sour battered pork balls with chicken fried rice and spring rolls. As I wrote that, I was certainly shocked because I order all of the bad stuff, but I guess that’s the way it is. The food that is the best tasting is, more often than not, the wort for us.
